Native - Australian Plant Essential Oils

For Description & Uses:

Australian Blue Cypress - 1/4 fl oz (7.5 ml) $32.70

Callitris intratropica

Description:

CiFruit.jpgAustralian Blue Cypress oil (ABC) was chosen as the "Essence of the 2000 Olympics". It is now used extensively in a wide range of innovative products throughout the world. True Australian Blue Cypress is produced by steam distillation from the wood of Callitris intratropica. Beware of counterfeits.

With its woody, smoky fragrance with sweet "liquorice" undertones, Australian Blue Cypress has similarities to sandalwood oils (Santalum album, Amyris balsamifer), guaiac wood oil (Bulnesia sarmienti), vertiver (Vetiveria zizanioides) and some of the cedarwood oils.

Its main uses are in perfumery, cosmetics and aromatherapy. Its properties are similar to Chamomile oil, but with a much more grounding character. A very good oil to blend, with a dominant woody base note, it helps to anchor top and middle notes. Use at low concentrations for balanced dry-down. ABC has some unique characteristics in the world of essential oils as it contains guaiazulene, which is not found in other natural essential oils derived from wood. This gives it its striking blue colour and also confers anti-inflammatory qualities similar to those of the other natural blue oils, such as Chamomile, Artemisia and Tansy. Safe in terms of toxicity and skin irritancy; but as with all essential oils, should be used sparingly. Avoid contact with eyes. Blends well with other Australian essential oils and with tangy/citrus, Lavender or floral essential oils.

Summary of Uses:

  • Calming, grounding, centering oil in aromatherapy and massage formulations
  • Anti-inflammatory, antifungal
  • Recommended concentration in formulations: 0.25% to 2.0%
